The Perfect Pregnancy - Naturally Supporting Mother and Child

The Perfect Pregnancy – Naturally Supporting Mother and Child

baby

snug as a bug in a funny coloured rug

I am an aunty.

On 14th October 2011 my baby sister had a baby. He’s a gorgeous little man and I’m totally smitten.

When my sister told me she was pregnant in February I offered my skills as a nutritionist to help her stay healthy. I am ridiculously passionate about supporting the body during pregnancy. It’s got a huge job to do. The woman’s body is actually producing another person! This miracle never fails to amaze me. The body is incredibly clever and will prioritise during pregnancy. It will put the baby first before the mother so often deficient mothers will suffer with health problems during and after pregnancy whilst the child remains healthy.

My sister was great. She followed the plan I gave her, she had a fantastic pregnancy, a healthy baby and she’s now healthy during breast feeding. Usually a baby is born with a greyish dull placenta which has been drained of all nutrients. Not my sister. She had a full healthy red one. I’m ridiculously proud of her.

So what’s the plan? What did I put her on?

Protein 60g per day -Helps in the production of amino acids, repairs cells, makes new cells. I recommend Syneprotein made with a non-genetically modified soya protein combined with vegetables, vitamins, minerals and herbs.

Fibre 40g per day- many women get constipated during pregnancy. It’s very important to keep the bowels moving even when you’re not pregnant (read all about it)

There are 2 main types of fibre

1.       Insoluble fibre absorbs water, softens stools and moves materials through the intestines. It also helps to balance the pH acidity levels inside the intestines.

2.       Soluble fibre helps maintain blood sugar as it binds with fatty acids and prolongs stomach emptying time so that sugar is released and absorbed more slowly.

To get enough fibre I recommend TNT from Natures Sunshine, great when mixed with Syneprotein

Zinc (up to 40mg per day) – needed for repair, growth and is a mineral involved in the building blocks of life (DNA). Also helps support the immune system.

Magnesium (350mg per day) – Calcium’s twin. The two are needed together and are essential for bone health, cardiovascular health, placental health, and adequate energy levels.  Magnesium is also important for the babies brain, vascular and bone development. Brilliant for labour as it relaxes muscles and eases cramping.

B vitamin complex – B vitamins like to work together and everyone knows the importance of folic acid (B9) during pregnancy to prevent birth defects such as spina bifida. B vitamin complex aids the fetal brain and spine development, supports the mothers and babies nervous system and studies have proved that proper amount of B6 relive vomiting or nausea in women during pregnancy.

And finally water. Drink lots of water. 2 litres a day please.

For any pregnant women interested in producing a baby that looks that good in a silly blanket please get in touch.

The Vaccine Debate – does vaccination protect children?

is vaccination protecting the child?

Yesterday I started a Facebook war. It was an accident. All I did was share the photo above but it seemed to trigger responses from a lot of people.

It seems we are really divided on the subject of vaccines.

Very often it seems that people have them because they are told to or because it’s the “done” thing or even worse because your child won’t get into their chosen school without them.

We are becoming obsessed I’ve heard of perfectly healthy 30 year olds having the flu jab or giving kids chicken pox vaccine. When my daughter was little we used to arrange chicken pox parties to get it over and done with.

The problem is that we don’t know what all this messing about is doing with our immune systems as part of the big picture. What if surviving chicken pox and flu when we are kids means our bodies are able to deal with some horror weve not yet heard of thats waiting in the wings.

The body is amazing, we come in contact with thousands of bugs every day and our immune system does it’s job most of the time, it takes a lot for the bugs to get through, in fact Louis Pasteur was said to renounce his work on his deathbed saying the bugs where already inherent in the body waiting for the right environment to be created they weren’t “caught”, this throws a spanner in the war of “us v’s the bugs” or as the mum in my favourite TV show “Dharma and Gregg” said -” bugs can only fly in when there is a hole in the soul”

One thing I do know is prevention is always better than cure. In the new hollywood movie “Contagion” the head of the CDC says about the superbug threatening to wipe out the human race is “the mortality rate is fluctuating depending on underlying medical conditions, socio-economic factors, nutrition and fresh water.
This is a big part of the argument for me.
Hands up who eats 10 organic fruit and veg a day, no coffee or alcohol, drinks 2 litres of water, has no sugar and lives a totally stress free life? Not many of us..
We have got into a place where we absolve ourselves of the responsibility of our health, it’s not our problem it’s the NHS’s and it’s much cheaper for them to jab us than fix us.

I’m not saying don’t do it, I’m saying think about it and research it before you do it, if you are about to volunteer to clear an old well out in a remote part of India your gonna want some peace of mind that you won’t die of cholera. I get it but also make sure you support your body properly as well.

There are alternatives. Homeopathy uses nosodes or looks at “fixing the weakness” in the body’s natural defences
In Kinesiology we use an energy signature of the disease and strengthen the immune system so it doesn’t fall apart when it comes on contact with the bugs or virus.

One of the comments on Facebook was that a general blanket opposition to vaccines is just as useless as fear based strategising from the drug companies pushing unnecessary vaccines on healthy people, the conflicting ideologies is confusing and we don’t know what to do for the best. The reality is that you have to be able to live with your choices and the outcomes of them, be that reacting to a vaccine or contracting a disease. In the words of Monty Python “don’t let anyone tell you what to do,we are all individuals” Thanks Brian for that.

The Price isn’t Right – My Fascination with Katie Price

katie-price

4 portions of chips with my burger please

Claire and I were talking the other day about celebrities.

I asked her ‘if you could get anyone on your couch who would it be?’ Claire said Adele. “She always has throat problems and laryngitis so is constantly cancelling her tours. She also struggles giving up smoking which will be trashing that gorgeous voice of hers. I reckon I can help support her immune system as well as help her give up smoking.” Good answer. What about me? Who do I want on my couch?

Katie Price. Everyday of the week. The woman fascinates me. I am so intrigued by her. It’s like watching a car crash in slow motion, I can’t turn away. I wonder what she is like in person, I also have a suspicion that her health is in a terrible state. When everyones out of the house and I’m alone with SKY1, a bag of raisins and ‘What Katie Did Next’ I am stunned to watch her starving herself, running marathons and then eating some horrendous take away burgers. Her poor tiny weeny body!

But it’s not just what she eats that intrigues me so. She puts herself out there day after day in the public view asking for opinion, criticism and comment. She is so desperate for perfection she mutates her face and body to achieve it. I see a woman looking outside herself for validation, acceptance and answers. And trust me Katie, that’s not the right place to look.

As Kinesiologists we take a whole person approach understanding that emotion plays a huge role in the health of an individual. Sure Katie Price has confidence, drive and ambition, I think the woman has incredible balls and hats off to her, the woman knows how to make money and market herself. But I question whether she actually loves herself. If she did why would she go to such extremes to change the way she looks? What could this twisted sense of self be doing to her health? My guess is that this non acceptance of who she is and what she looks like is as unhealthy for Katie as that manky burger. Katie, if you’re reading this, I would love to have you on my couch, just call round anytime and book an appointment.
